Reconstruction of Old Town’s Stillwater Avenue on budget, on schedule, says Department of Transportation
OLD TOWN, Maine — The Stillwater Avenue Reconstruction is on budget and on schedule, according to a Department of Transportation spokesman.
The nearly $7 million project started in May and is a complete rebuild of Stillwater Avenue from the College Avenue intersection to the Old Town Elementary School.
The project will include, among other things, the reconstruction of that stretch of road; the addition of a third turning lane, crosswalks and sidewalks; installation of new water and sewer mains, and extensive drainage improvements.
Sargent Corporation of Stillwater has been subcontracted by the Department of Transportation to complete the work, said Old Town City Manager Bill Mayo.
Currently, traffic has been reduced to one lane as work is done on the road.
“It’s going well,” Ted Talbot, Department of Transportation spokesman, said Wednesday. “They’re even working nights near Governor’s Restaurant and McDonald’s.”
About 30 percent of the concrete underneath the road has been removed, he said.
There have been few complaints from residents, said Mayo. Most of the complaints revolve around traffic.
“I think the biggest issue is there are 20,000 cars a day that travel along Stillwater Avenue,” Mayo said. “When you start tearing it up, it’s difficult. I think Sargent has done a really good job in trying to maintain two-way traffic as they can. Sometimes there are just parts of the project they can’t do it.
“I know it’s an inconvenience right now, there’s no question about that, but when the project’s done, it will be a major upgrade for that area,” he said.
Mayo said that stretch of Stillwater Avenue is among the busiest roads in the area behind Broadway in Bangor and Wilson Street in Brewer.
The project should wrap up for the year around Nov. 15, said Talbot.
“They will put down two layers of pavement to last the winter and then come back next season to finish up side work, including drainage, ditching and such and then put down the final layer of pavement,” he added.
