TOPSHAM, Maine — Sagadahoc County Democrats on Monday elected Eloise Vitelli of Arrowsic, a director of program and policy at Women, Work and Community, as their nominee in the August 27 special election to fill the seat vacated by Seth Goodall.

Vitelli bested Bath City Councilor David Sinclair and Will Neilson, owner of Solo Bistro in Bath, at the party caucus at Mt. Ararat High School.

Vitelli said earlier this month that she was asked to run by Goodall, a Richmond Democrat who served as Senate majority leader this year and resigned July 9 to take over as New England regional director of the Small Business Association.

“I’m grateful and delighted to have the support of my county caucus, and I very much look forward to working hard during this very short campaign and joining my Senate caucus members in Augusta, and I will do my part to help them move the Democratic agenda forward,” Vitelli said Monday evening.

Vitelli received 77 votes, with Neilson taking 11 votes and Sinclair 4, according to Vitelli.

Bronwen Tudor, chairwoman of the Sagadahoc County Democrats, said she was pleased with the “fantastic turnout.

“We are thrilled to have a strong candidate and we are ready to start the campaign tomorrow,” she said.

Vitelli will compete for the Senate seat with Topsham social worker Daniel Stromgren, 40, who the Sagadahoc County Green Independent Party elected at a July 15 caucus; and the nominee who the Sagadahoc GOP selects at their caucus Tuesday night at the Smith-Tobey American Legion in Bath.

Paula Benoit of Phippsburg, who served one term in the Legislature representing District 19, announced previously that she will seek the Republican nomination.

Democrats currently hold 19 seats in the Maine Senate, Republicans hold 15 and there is one independent. No Green Independent party candidate has ever won a Maine Senate seat.
