LEBANON, Maine — An East Lebanon woman suffered serious injuries Sunday morning after she was thrown off her horse while riding at her family’s farm, officials said.
The 46-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was riding when several birds spooked the horse, according to Lebanon Rescue Assistant Chief Jason Cole.
Upon being frightened by the smaller animals, the 6-foot-tall horse threw the woman, who is an experienced rider, about 12 feet in the air, Cole said.
The woman was wearing a helmet, Cole said, but her injuries were significant enough that she was taken by ambulance to nearby SkyDive New England where a LifeFlight helicopter was waiting.
The victim was airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where Cole said she is in serious condition.
