ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Brewer man was arrested Friday after police set up a sting operation at the swimming area on Branch Lake.

Dispatchers in Ellsworth received calls on Wednesday and Thursday from distraught swimmers who had cash or purses stolen from their cars in the parking lot near the lake’s boat launch.

So officers set up a “bait car” stocked with $100 in it around noon Friday, said Lt. Harold Page.

The officers set up the car and “sat on it for awhile,” he said. “Sure enough, a little while later this guy drives in, pops out of his vehicle and got like $22 out of one car. Then he walked up to our bait car and took the $100 bait.”

Kevin Morse, 28, of Brewer was charged with two counts of burglary and taken to Hancock County Jail, according to the lieutenant. Morse has since been released from jail, but no bail information was available Monday.

Page said motorists should always lock their cars when they’re unattended.

“If you can’t see your car, it should be locked up,” he said.
