Ellsworth man arrested for allegedly assaulting two hospital staffers while drunk

ELLSWORTH, Maine — A 55-year-old Ellsworth man was arrested Friday evening after allegedly assaulting two hospital employees while drunk.

The man, Wayne Willigar, called Ellsworth police around 4 p.m. Friday, seeking medical assistance. Lt. Harold Page on Monday said that Willigar was intoxicated when he called.

An officer escorted County Ambulance from Willigar’s home to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital at the request of EMTs, who said Willigar had behaved aggressively with them in the past. Officer Chris Smith drove behind the ambulance and stood by while Willigar settled into a patient room at the hospital.

Shortly after 5 p.m., police were called back to the hospital.

“Against medical advice he was trying to leave the hospital,” Page said. It is unclear whether medical personnel attempted to restrain Willigar — the lieutenant said that restraint is permitted in some situations — but at some point, Willigar “shoved” two hospital employees in his effort to leave.

The man fled on foot but was caught by Smith. After Willigar was cleared medically, he was charged with two counts of assault and brought to Hancock County Jail. Willigar has since been released from jail, but not bail information was made available Monday.
