Angus King talks NSA, student loans, riding his Harley

Angus King answered BDN reader questions recently about the National Security Agency leak of classified information, student loan interest rates and whether he’s had time to ride his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

As a member of the Senate select intelligence committee, do you have any plans to call for a bipartisan investigation on the National Security Agency’s domestic spying program, similar to the Church Committee in the 1970s? — Jared Sawyer

“Believe me, we have already had a series of hearings on these issues. … We met with one of the highest people at the National Security Agency to push and probe about the program and how it’s being administered. This is not easy stuff. On the one hand there are people out there who want to kill us. … The nightmare is a portable nuclear weapon. … On the other hand we don’t want our government spying on us and unduly intruding into our privacy. The challenge that I feel that I have, and we all do here, is to try to find the right balance.”

What are you going to do to make certain that college students pay below-market interest rates on student loans? — Valerie Cook Chiasson

“I’ve been working with a group of senators from both the Democratic and Republican Party daily, hourly, for the past month on finding a solution that will do just what you said, that will keep student loan rates to the amount the government itself pays to borrow money, plus an adder for the cost of administering the program and the risks of default. … Hopefully we’re going to be able to get this [legislation] through the Senate next week and into the House and to the president.”

Have you been riding your Harley? — Jason M. Bartlett

“No, I’ve been down here most of the time, and when I’m home I just haven’t had much time. Last summer I had a great ride from Fort Kent to Kittery, 650 miles with a bunch of friends. … Maybe I can get up to the toy run in September.”
