Severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail forecast for central, eastern Maine

BANGOR, Maine — The National Weather Service in Caribou has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook notice for central and southern Pisacataquis County, central and southern Penobscot County, coastal Hancock County and coastal and northern Washington County.

The notice states that there is potential for severe thunderstorms this evening, with the highest threat mainly across the central highlands and interior Down East areas. Some of the stronger storms could bring damaging winds, very heavy rainfall and hail. Some storms could also have rotation.

Bangor Hydro crews have been dispatched to restore power to several thousand customers who are without service due to the damaging storms. Towns affected include Mattawamkeag, Lee, East Millinocket, Medway, Lincoln and surrounding communities. Bangor Hydro reported that 3,245 customers in the area were without power at 8:30 p.m. The company estimated that power would be restored by 10:00 p.m., but continued thunderstorms causing additional outages may delay restoration efforts.

A strong cold front will cross the region on Saturday, bringing another round of strong to possibly severe thunderstorms. Heavy rainfall and strong, gusty winds are again possible with any thunderstorms that do develop.
