BANGOR, Maine — There will be little time to savor regular-season success for the American Legion Zone 1 baseball programs.
The seven teams are scheduled to conclude their schedules Saturday, with the top five clubs advancing to the Zone 1 tournament that begins Sunday evening at Husson University.
There’s no drama remaining in determining the teams that have qualified for the zone’s postseason field, and the final question about specific seedings was to be resolved Thursday evening.
Bangor (19-1) has clinched the No. 1 seed while Hampden (16-4) will enter Monday’s double-elimination phase of the zone tourney as the second seed.
And the Penquis Navigators (10-10) of Dover-Foxcroft will be the fifth seed, topping Northern Lumber of Millinocket (7-12) and the Trenton Acadians (6-14) for the final postseason berth.
Motor City will be the opponent for Penquis in Sunday’s 7 p.m. tournament play-in game after Brewer shut out Motor City 2-0 Thursday night to secure the Zone’s third seed.
Brewer’s Jeff Weeks pitched a complete game two-hitter to give the Falcons the victory at Husson University’s Winkin Complex. Weeks struck out seven and walked just one batter and was aided by an errorless Falcons defense.
Brewer got on the board when Ben Pushard reached third base on an error on a ball hit to center to begin the third inning. Pushard scored with one out on a wild pitch.
The victory gave Brewer a 12-8 record with a game remaining on Saturday against Penquis and Motor City finished at 12-9, but Brewer earned the third seed because it won two of three games against Motor City during the season. So, if Brewer loses its finale and also finishes at 12-9, it still gains the third seed.
Those teams split two earlier meetings this summer, with Brewer winning 4-0 at Bangor on June 24 and Motor City edging the Falcons 2-1 at Brewer on July 7.
Brewer will now face No. 2 Hampden in Monday’s double-elimination opener at 4 p.m. while No. 1 Bangor will play the second game at 7 p.m. against Sunday’s play-in winner.
The double-elimination phase of the Zone 1 tournament continues with games at 4 and 7 p.m. each night through Wednesday, with an if-necessary championship game at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 25.
The Zone 1 champion advances directly to the state American Legion tournament to be held in Augusta from Wednesday, July 31, to Sunday, Aug. 4, with that team playing its first state game against the Zone 5 (York County) runner-up at 4 p.m. on opening day.
The Zone 1 runner-up will advance to a play-in game against the Zone 4 (Portland area) runner-up at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, in Augusta for the right to advance to the eight-team, double-elimination phase of the state tourney.
The winner of that play-in game would then return to Augusta to face the Zone 5 champion at 11 a.m. on July 31.
Bangor is the defending Zone 1 champion, while Brewer was the zone runner-up in 2012.
