EASTBROOK, Maine — A fire destroyed a barn and a nearby house Thursday afternoon on Webb Pond Road, according to firefighters who fought the blaze.

A woman was home at the time of the fire but got out safely with her dog, but some cats may not have been so lucky, firefighters said.

Robert Grindle, chief of the Franklin Fire Department and commander at the Eastbrook blaze, said Thursday evening he did not know the name of the homeowner or if the property was insured.

The fire started in the barn and then spread to the house standing about 20 feet away and into an adjacent field, firefighters said. The barn was leveled and the house, though still standing, was too damaged by fire, smoke and water to be salvaged. Firefighters said they expect to ask the state fire marshal’s office to investigate.

No injuries were reported.

Grindle said he thinks the homeowner might stay with friends but that the Pine Tree Chapter of the Red Cross likely will be contacted for possible assistance.

“She lost everything,” he said.

An estimated 35 to 40 firefighters from Eastbrook, Franklin, Gouldsboro, Hancock, Sorrento, Sullivan and Waltham helped fight the fire, which was reported around 4 p.m.
