Little league District 3 champ Old Town prepares for state tourney

The Old Town Little League baseball all-stars are preparing for state-tourney action this weekend after capturing the District 3 title for ages 9-10 in Orrington last week.

Old Town will play its first state-tourney game when it takes on the District 5 champ at 5 p.m. Saturday in Waldoboro, the site of this year’s tourney. The field is on 592 Main St.

Old Town advanced to the state tourney after beating Hermon 9-8 in eight innings last Wednesday in the District 3 final.

Tanner Evans paced Old Town with two singles while Zack Dill chipped in with a single and double and Casey Downs doubled. Sam Martin and Matt Seymour handled the pitching duties.

Gabe Sherman tripled for Hermon and Nate Allain doubled.

The Old Town roster for the state tourney is: Joseph D’Angelo (shortstop, catcher), Evans (pitcher, shortstop, catcher), Dill (shortstop, third base), Downs (first base, pitcher), Isaac Hayes (second base, outfield), Maddox Sapiel (second base, outfield), Seymour (pitcher, third base), Sam Magoon (third base, outfield, pitcher), Micah Betters (third base, outfield), Shea Hines (outfield), Seth Haverlock (outfield, pitcher) and Martin (pitcher, outfield).

The team’s manager is Shawn Leland, and he is assisted by coaches Dan Magoon and Joey Downs.

Leland said a key component for Old Town’s victory in the District 3 final was that “the boys just kept battling and were very aggressive on the basepaths.”
