ORLANDO, Florida — The Maine Athletic Club 15-and-under team advanced to the final 16 of the 2013 Division II AAU Boys Basketball National Tournament being held at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports before being eliminated from the event Monday evening.

The Hampden-based team defeated Team Heat of Yuma, Ariz., 64-45 in its medal-round opener behind the scoring of three players who recently completed their freshman years at Hampden Academy.

Brendon McIntyre led MAC with 21 points, while Conary Moore scored 14 points and Jake Black added 13.

MAC began the game applying full-court run-and-jump defensive pressure that forced six early Team Heat turnovers, enabling the Maine contingent to build a 10-4 lead by the end of the first quarter.

MAC shook off some early foul trouble to Black to continue to build its lead, getting seven second-quarter points from McIntyre to go with some key contributions from teammates Nick Chasse and Hunter Smith.

The Maine squad got off to a quick start in the second half thanks to a steal by Riley Robinson that led to a layup by Nick Gilpin. A subsequent steal by Moore and a 3-pointer by Black helped extend the MAC lead to 47-31 by the end of the third period.

The Brevard County (Fla.) Bulls then knocked MAC out of medal contention with a 57-38 win.

The Florida team jumped out to a 12-4 lead, and the game was halted for 25 minutes in the first quarter after Moore suffered a broken nose.

In the second quarter, Brevard County made three 3-pointers to extend its lead to 29-11 by intermission.

McIntyre finished with 17 points for MAC.

MAC fell to the Connecticut Elite 64-57 in a consolation-bracket game to conclude its stay at the nationals.

The Maine team led 21-16 after the first quarter and 33-28 at halftime, but Connecticut held MAC scoreless until the 2:09 mark of the third quarter to take a four-point lead before the Maine contingent ran off eight straight points to tie the game at 41-41 entering the final period.

Connecticut then used its offensive rebounding strength to score four baskets on putbacks during the fourth quarter to put the game away.

McIntyre led MAC with 17 points, while Gilpin scored 12, Andrew Fleming added 11 and Smith and Robinson combined for 14.
