HARTLAND, Maine — A Maine Warden Service dive team searched Monday for a missing boater on Great Moose Lake.
Wardens received a call at about 7 p.m. Sunday reporting a boat going in circles near Pickerel Cove, said Lt. Kevin Adam on Monday afternoon.
“We responded on a boat doing circles without an operator in it,” Adam said. “We did some searching last night and didn’t find anything. Today we’ve come back with our dive team to look in the waters in that area.”
Doug Rafferty, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, identified the missing boater as William Witt, 66, of Harmony.
“As far as we know he was alone,” Adam said. “We’re using the resources we have right now. We had the plane here earlier. Now with the chop, you can’t see down that far. We’ve got divers in the water.”
Visibility was only 8-15 feet in the water because of the choppy surface, he said.
Wardens will be searching for at least a couple of days, Adam said.
