4 escape Brewer house fire Monday afternoon

BREWER, Maine — Despite initial reports that people might be trapped inside, two adults and two children escaped a small house fire without injury Monday afternoon.

The fire at 77 Birchwood Boulevard began shortly after 2 p.m. at the backside of the building, Capt. Robbie Wildes of the Brewer Fire Department said Monday afternoon.

“When we pulled out [of the fire station], they said there was still possibly kids inside. There was smoke showing. We went in and they had gotten all the kids out,” Wildes said.

The names of the occupants weren’t immediately available. Wildes said, however, the structure is insured.

“There was one cat still inside,” he said, adding that the cat survived and that no one, including firefighters from Brewer and Bangor were injured.

Wildes said that the fire’s cause remains under investigation.

“It appears the fire started on the back of the deck and went up. … It primarily stayed in the attic,” he said.

Making the going tough for fire crews was Monday’s heat — temperatures were in the mid-90s — and the humidity, Wildes said.

“It wore us out quick,” he said.

Wildes said that while most of the damage was contained to the attic, there was enough damage to prevent the family from staying in the house Monday night.

Wildes also said that electrical service temporarily was disconnected.
