NEWBURGH – William R. Stepp, 73, dear husband of Martha (MacCrae) Stepp, died Sunday, July 7, 2013, at a Bangor hospital, with Martha and their sons at his side. Bill was born Jan. 27, 1940, in Asheville, N.C., the youngest child of Nicholas B. and Mary Lou (Queen) Stepp.
Bill attended schools in North Carolina and Virginia before serving four years in the U.S. Air Force. He met Martha MacCrae of Hampden while stationed at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, marrying her in 1966 before they moved to Germany for his duty at Rhein Main Air Force Base. Returning to Maine, Bill spent his working life in the parts department for Darling’s and CarQuest. Bill and Martha moved in 1970 to Newburgh, where they built their own home and raised sons, Andrew and Matthew. From their dad, the boys learned all about fixing cars, building things from wood including tree houses and wheelchair ramps, and rooting for the Boston Red Sox and the Dallas Cowboys. For the past 10 years, Bubba and Grammy have provided nurturing care and early education for beloved grandchildren, Mackenzie, Morgan and Harper.
Bill is survived by his wife, Martha of Newburgh; son, Andrew Stepp and wife, Charlene, and their daughters, Mackenzie and Morgan, of Hermon; and son, Matthew Stepp and his son, Harper of Hampden; brothers, Robert N. Stepp of Florida and C. David Stepp; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joyce and Robert Howe of Brewer and their daughters, Melissa MacCrae and Jessica Favor. Bill was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Betty Lou; and a nephew, Michael Howe.
Plans for a memorial will be announced at a later date.
