Bronco, Bangor East, Brewer, Hermon stars advance to semifinals in District 3 baseball tourney

Bronco Little League of Hampden, Bangor East, Brewer and Hermon advanced to the semifinal round of the District 3 Little League all-star baseball tourney for ages 11-12 with quarterfinal victories on Friday.

Hermon shut out Lincoln 7-0, Bangor East rolled by Millinocket 19-0, Brewer blanked Sebasticook Valley 4-0 and Bronco LL edged Holbrook 7-5.

Bronco will host Bangor East on Monday while Hermon will visit Brewer. The winners advance to Tuesday’s championship game.

The District 3 winner then advances to the state tourney in Augusta, set for July 19-25.

Baseball

District 3, 11-12

Bronco 7, Holbrook 5

At Holden, Derek Gendreau pitched six solid innings and helped his cause with two singles and two RBI as Bronco Little League of Hampden defeated Holbrook.

Holbrook took the early lead by putting up three runs in the top of the first, highlighted by Levi Williamson’s home run over the left-center fence.

Hampden took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with four runs, highlighted by a two-run single by Gendreau.

Hampden scored two more runs in the bottom of the third and held on to win.

Nick Lorenzo chipped in with a single and double for Bronco while Jonah Roberts added a single, RBI and scored three runs.

Jacob Miller doubled for Holbrook.

Hampden 1-4-2-0-0-x — 7-7-5

Williamson, Cunningham (2) and Kiley; Gendreau and Dow

Bangor East 19, Millinocket 0

At Taylor Field in Bangor, Noah Missbrenner and Zach Cowperthwaite each hit three-run home runs as Bangor East eliminated Millinocket while improving to 4-0.

Missbrenner also had two singles while Cowperthwaite had a single and a double. Josh Sherwood collected three singles.

Cowperthwaite was the winning pitcher for Bangor East.

Mark DiBona and Trenton Goody each had a hit for 1-2 Millinocket.

Hermon 7, Lincoln 0

At Hermon, Alex Applebee sparked Hermon as he struck out nine while not walking a batter in 4 2/3 innings to help his team advance.

Chris Sherman got the final out in the fifth and Mark Mailloux finished the game in the sixth.

Cody Hawes provided support with a two-run double and Alex Applebee slammed an RBI triple. Adam Rush added an RBI single.

Alex Brown singled and doubled for Lincoln.

District 3, 10-11

Bronco 17, Old Town 9

At Glenburn, Bronco Little League of Hampden scored 10 runs in the fifth inning to eliminated Old Town.

Bronco (3-1) advanced to a noon championship game Saturday against Holbrook (3-0). A Bronco win would force a second game at noon Sunday.

Jackson Thayer paced Bronco with two singles and four RBI. William Hodgden chipped in with a double, two singles and three RBI while Robert Buzzini added a double, single and two RBI.

Jacob Cyr sparked Old Town with a triple, double and two RBI.

District 1, Juniors

Coastal 12, Acadian 10

At Bar Harbor, Coastal scored 10 runs in the second inning en route to the victory and eliminated Acadian.

Coastal (1-1) advanced to a Sunday game against Bucksport while Acadian finished at 0-2.

Jake Keenan sparked Coastal of the Blue Hill area with an RBI double and two singles. Ethan Shepard chipped in with three singles while Garrison Looke added an RBI double and single. Nick Bianco contributed a two-run double, Tyler Snow smacked an RBI double and Ethan Vinall singled twice.

For Acadian, Alex Galeaz and Seth Clark each notched two singles, with Galeaz driving in two runs. Avery Lavalle and Zachary Galeaz each contributed an RBI single and Josh Chumbe had a sacrifice fly.

Coastal sent 14 batters to the plate in its 10-run second, with Biance’s two-run double and Looke’s RBI double highlighting the inning.

Softball

State tourney, 11-12

Scarborough 2, Kennebunk 1

At Rockland, the state championship featured two great pitching performances, but Kennebunk came up short in its sixth-inning rally, and Scarborough was crowned the state champion. Kaitlyn Verreault got the win for Scarborough, pitching a complete game. She gave up one run on two hits, struck out seven and walked two.

Verreault retired the side in order in the first four innings.

Bailey Cain took the tough-luck loss for Kennebunk, surrendering two runs (none earned) on just one hit, striking out seven and walking five.

Scarborough scored its two runs in the third. With two on, Verreault hit a fly ball to right that dropped in, scoring Sydney Michelson and Felicia O’Reilly.

Kennebunk then rallied in the sixth on an infield grounder by Bailey Cain that drove in Margaret Yemma, who walked earlier in the inning.

Scarborough advances to the Little League East Region Tournament starting July 19 in Bristol, Conn.
