BATH, Maine — Debris from a welder working on the DDG-1000 destroyer fell onto a fiberglass ladder and created smoke at Bath Iron Works Friday, drawing BIW and Bath Fire departments to what turned out to be no fire.

Weld “spatter” fell onto the top step of the ladder on the destroyer just before noon, prompting an employee to pull the fire alarm, BIW spokesman Jim DeMartini said.

The ship was evacuated and the incident was over quickly. No injuries or damage to the ship occurred.

“Everything happened the way it was supposed to happen,” DeMartini said. printed on July 23, 2017
