NOBLEBORO, Maine — An 83-year-old Nobleboro woman died instantly in a head-on collision Friday morning on Route 1, according to police.
Katharine Brown was headed south on Route 1 just before 11 a.m. when her 2000 Honda Civic apparently crossed the center line into the northbound lane and struck a 2007 GMC pickup truck driven by Daryl Rhode, 51, of Rogers City, Mich., according to a release from Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Michael J. Murphy.
The crash occurred about one mile north of the intersection with Back Meadow Road.
Brown, the lone occupant in her car, was found by first responders inside her vehicle. Murphy said it appears she died instantly.
Rhode’s truck was towing a large, fifth-wheel camper. Neither Rhode nor any of the occupants of his vehicle were injured.
Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash, but blood samples will be tested by the state medical examiner’s office.
Route 1 was closed for approximately five hours while investigators examined the scene. Traffic was rerouted along Center Street.
The Maine State Police, Maine Warden Service, Nobleboro Fire Department, the Lincoln County Communication Center, Damariscotta Police Department and Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service helped the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deal with the collision and its aftermath.
