BELFAST, Maine — Police who responded to a report of an accident early this morning on the U.S. Route 1 cloverleaf found a little more trouble at the scene than they had expected, according to Belfast Police Chief Mike McFadden.

Police, fire and ambulance crews went to the crash at the Route 1 off-ramp near Belfast Variety at about 12:30 a.m. and found three people in the vehicle who displayed “signs of intoxication,” McFadden said. Although there was initially some confusion about who had been driving, officers ended up arresting Jessi A. Knowlton, 23, of Swanville and charging her with operating under the influence. She complained of chest pain from being hit by the steering wheel, McFadden said, although she refused treatment at the scene.

However, after Knowlton’s arrest, passenger Mark Smith, 22, of Belfast, became agitated with the other man in the vehicle, according to the chief. Officers said he began fighting with the other man and did not stop when police asked him to, so the police had to wade into the fray to break up the fight.

Officers Brian Lunt, Rick Smith and Brian Hansen were able to restrain Smith, McFadden said. They placed him under arrest and charged him with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Both Knowlton and Smith were taken into police custody at Waldo County Jail in Belfast but were released on bail later that morning, according to a jail official.
