MILLINOCKET, Maine — A Massachusetts man who wanted to see moose on the Golden Road got more than he bargained for Wednesday night.

Aldo Dicenso was out for a ride along the 100-mile road that connects Millinocket with Quebec, when a moose jumped in front of his pickup truck, Millinocket Fire Chief Andrew Turcotte said.

Upon seeing the large animal, Dicenso overcorrected and his truck hit the road’s soft shoulder before it rolled over, Turcotte said. Even though he wasn’t wearing a seat belt, Dicenso was not seriously hurt.

“He was extremely lucky,” the fire chief said.

The crash occurred about 30 miles from the Millinocket end of the road at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Turcotte said. Dicenso was stuck in the ditch inside his wrecked vehicle for five hours until a local celebrity, Brian Nutting, famously known as Bonecrusher from Discovery Channel’s “American Loggers,” found him while he was out hauling wood along the road.

Turcotte said it took rescue personnel about 25 minutes to arrive. The chief added that accidents are rare on Golden Road.

“I would say we see probably half a dozen crashes on that road a year,” said Turcotte.

Dicenso suffered cuts on his face that required 20 stitches, the fire chief said.

Dicenso, whose hometown and age weren’t available, told firefighters at the scene he wanted to see one of Maine’s signature animals. And he wound up meeting one up close and personal.

“He told us he was out for a joyride, and he wanted to look for moose,” said Turcotte.

Maine State Police assisted Millinocket rescue personnel at the scene.
