Warren man accused of drunk driving after reporting car stolen

By Stephen Betts, BDN Staff

ROCKLAND, Maine — A 24-year-old Warren man was arrested Monday and charged with multiple offenses, including driving drunk, after he called police to report his vehicle had been stolen.

Deputy John Hansen of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stolen vehicle and later found the car off the road on Lone Cove Drive in Union. The registered owner, Cruz Richards, was at the scene and said he had arrived to find his car off the road and the driver gone.

But Hansen’s investigation led to the arrest of Richards, according to Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison.

Richards was charged with operating under the influence, failure to report accident by quickest means and violating a condition of release on a June OUI charge.

Dennison said additional charges in the latest incident may be forthcoming.

Richards has been released on bail since his Monday arrest.
