BATH, Maine — A 21-year-old man required to register as a sex offender was arrested Sunday evening during the city’s Heritage Days celebration for violating his probation after police found him near children.

Joseph Plummer III, whose address is listed on the Maine Sex Offender Registry as Woolwich but who Bath police say gave them an Alna address, was arrested just after 8:30 p.m. at Waterfront Park on Commercial Street.

Police were alerted by someone who recognized Plummer from the registry, according to Bath Police Lt. Robert Savary.

Plummer was convicted of unlawful sexual contact and must register as a sex offender for 10 years, according to the registry.

Among the conditions of his probation are that he have no contact with children, Savary said.

Plummer “didn’t do anything wrong other than being at the festivities,” Savary said, but one of the conditions of his probation are that he have no contact with children.

“There were children around him at the time of the arrest, but no direct contact was made with any of them as far as we know,” Savary said.
