Police seek pair who allegedly assaulted cyclist in Canaan

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

CANAAN, Maine — Police are seeking two suspects who allegedly assaulted a 50-year-old woman in Somerset County on Sunday afternoon.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said the assault occurred on Whitten Road sometime between noon and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

The victim was pulled off her bicycle by the two men and sexually assaulted before the suspects fled in a vehicle, McCausland said.

A passing motorist stopped to assist the woman after the attack and called 911, the state police spokesman said. The victim is a Florida resident who was visiting a relative in Canaan.

The victim was treated at Redington Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan and then released, McCausland said.

Whitten Road is not a heavily traveled road so McCausland said he hopes the public can give police helpful information that leads to the capture of the assailants.

Anyone who traveled along the road between noon and 2:30 p.m. and may have information is urged to call state police in Augusta at 624-7076.
