BANGOR, Maine — The mother of a 2½-year-old girl found dead during the early morning hours of June 24 in a car in Stetson was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder, according to the Maine State Police.

Leanna Norris, 24, of Auburn was taken into custody from a medical facility in Rockport where she had been receiving treatment, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine State Police.

“The child died during the evening hours of June 23 in Newport,” Maine State Police Lt. Christopher Coleman said Wednesday. “Her body was discovered a few hours later in Stetson on June 24.”

Although the manner of death is still pending, the chief medical examiner’s office has ruled the death of Loh Melody Grenda a homicide.

Coleman said that no other details about the investigation or the child’s death would be released.

Norris was indicted June 26 by the Penobscot County grand jury but the indictment was sealed pending her arrest.

She is being held at the Penobscot County Jail and is expected to be arraigned on the murder charge Friday morning at the Penobscot County Judicial Center.

Norris went to Central High School in Corinth and graduated in 2007, according to her Facebook page. Several of her friends and relatives have posted messages of sorrow on her Facebook page.

If convicted of murder, Norris faces between 25 years and life in prison.

She is one of 11 defendants facing murder or manslaughter charges in Penobscot County.

The other defendants are: Kyle Dube, 20, of Orono; William Hall, 31, of Bangor; Roxanne Jeskey, 50, of Bangor; Jason A. Trickett, 42, transient; Nicholas J. Sexton, 32, of Warwick, R.I.; Randall “Ricky” Daluz, 35, of Brockton, Mass.; Dustin Brown, 29, of Bangor; Akeem T. Harris, 24, of Amityville, N.Y.; David Coon, 50, of Bangor; and Peter Robinson, 50, of Bradford, who is awaiting sentencing.
