Governor swears in new Washington County judge

AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage on Tuesday swore in former Calais lawyer David J. Mitchell to serve as a District Court judge for Washington County.

Mitchell replaces District Court Judge John V. Romei, who retired in June from his full-time duties after 21 years on the bench. Romei also was sworn in on Tuesday to serve as an active retired District Court judge.

“I am pleased to swear in Judge Mitchell and Judge Romei, both of whom have distinguished records,” LePage said in a press release issued Tuesday. “In choosing judges, my focus is on the qualifications, demeanor, and integrity of the candidates, not politics. Judge Mitchell and Judge Romei reflect those priorities.”

Both judges were reviewed by the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee and confirmed by the full Senate.
