BERWICK, Maine — The operator of a motorcycle was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital after a motorcycle accident on Guinea Road on Saturday afternoon.

Police went to the scene of an accident near James Way at 3:32 p.m. when a passerby noticed a Harley-Davidson in a ditch on the side of the road.

Sgt. Jeff Scott said officers found local man Robert V. Cushing, Jr., 46, with his bike. Cushing was taken to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital with what officials called severe injuries before being airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment.

Scott said Cushing’s suffered head and shoulder injuries. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Police say Cushing was traveling from Blackberry Hill Road toward Route 9 when he lost control of the bike.

While Scott said police have “no reason to believe alcohol or drugs were involved,” they are keeping the investigation open.

Sgt. Jeff Pilkington was reconstructing the accident Saturday evening as part of the investigation.
