Betty W. Sawyer

JONESPORT – Betty (Wersebe) Sawyer, 83, died June 25, 2013 in Jonesport, at Sunrise Care Facility. She was born in Newburgh, N.Y., to John Albert and Mary Jane (Keevill) Wersebe.

Betty graduated from College of General Education, Sargent College, and Boston University with a degree in physical therapy. She worked at healthcare centers in Tennessee, New York, Massachusetts and here in Maine. She was very active in the communities she lived in, with a special focus on animal welfare. She served two terms on the state animal welfare board, also serving on the boards of the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals, Maine Friends of Animals, and on behalf of all the animals testified on numerous hearings in Augusta. She founded the Jonesport Animal Assistance Society, and served on the board of the Ark, and Pet Society. She was vice president and secretary of Worcester-Sawyer Agency, and was a licensed real estate broker.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, John V. Sawyer II; children, Susan Smith and husband, Timothy, of Sidney, John V. Sawyer III and wife, Laurie, of Sidney, and Daniel J. Sawyer III and wife, Nancy, of Jonesport; grandchildren, Justin, Daniel IV, John IV, Kai, and Sarah; and a sister, Eleanor Prout of Baltimore.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 28, at Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport, with Pastor Phyllis Merritt officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s memory may be made to Ark Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 276, Cherryfield, ME 04622. Arrangements are in care of McClure Family Funeral Services, Machias.
