Westfield man in critical condition after weekend accident

By Jen Lynds, BDN Staff

WESTFIELD, Maine — Officials with the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department said late on Wednesday evening that they are investigating a weekend accident that has left a Westfield man hospitalized in critical condition.

The accident took place on Miller Road just before 6:30 p.m. on June 22, according to Sgt. Forrest Dudley of the Sheriff’s Department.

The sergeant said that emergency personnel were called to the Westfield location in response to a report of a man lying in a ditch on the side of the road. When they arrived, Dudley said, they found Basil B. Bragdon, 69, lying motionless in a ditch.

At this point, Dudley said, it appears Bragdon was driving a motorized scooter heading west on Miller Road when he lost control of the scooter, careened out of control and ended up in the ditch. Bragdon suffered severe head trauma during the incident and was taken by Crown Ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle.

He was later flown by Aroostook Critical Care Transport to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he was listed in critical condition on Wednesday evening.

The crash is being investigated by Sheriff’s Deputy Vance Palmer with assistance from Deputy Mitch Wheeler. Members of the Mars Hill Fire Department assisted at the scene.
