VEAZIE, Maine — Town Councilor Tammy Olson was elected Monday night to another year as chairman in a redo of a vote taken during a special council meeting last week.

As it turned out, all five council members needed to be present for the vote on the chairman, councilors noted. Councilor Chris Bagley was absent. In addition, the election of the chairman was added to the special meeting agenda, which is not permitted.

Councilor Joe Friedman also was nominated for the leadership position. Before councilors voted on his nomination, however, Friedman said he was not interested in serving as chairman at this time, leaving Olson the sole nominee.

In other organizational business, councilors agreed to try to limit their meetings to an hour and a half in length, a move that Olson noted might improve public attendance and participation. Councilors also agreed to include one period for public comment — as opposed to the current two comment periods — during their meetings.

Also on Monday, councilors voted to sell one of the town’s firetrucks — the oldest in its fleet — to Penobscot County, which County Administrator Bill Collins said will be used in Kingman Township. The county offered to pay $30,000 for the 22-year-old vehicle.

In other business, town councilors agreed it is time to review the town charter. The proposal to that end was made by Friedman, who noted that councilors had been talking about doing so for “years and years.”

At the recommendation of Councilor Robert Rice, who was elected to this post earlier this month, the town’s legal counsel will be invited to discuss the charter review during a meeting in the near future.

The town on Tuesday issued a call for volunteers to serve on the committee, which likely will have three to five members, one of whom will be a council member.
