Teen still in hospital after massive Lewiston brawl

By Sun Journal

LEWISTON, Maine — A teenager remained hospitalized Friday with a head injury following a Thursday night brawl, police said.

A 17-year-old male was being held for observation at Central Maine Medical Center, police said. Two others were treated and released from the hospital. They are Karen Cundiff, 46, and Joshua Emerson, 29, both of 102 Bartlett St., police said.

Witnesses said the Bartlett Street brawl that erupted shortly after 9:30 p.m. involved as many as four dozen people who were wielding a variety of weapons, including sticks and baseball bats.

Witnesses said Cundiff and Emerson were jumped by a group of about a half dozen people, who fled after beating the pair.

Some people familiar with the victims said the scrap was the result of ongoing racial tensions and that further violence is likely. However, police did not say what motivated the attack as the investigation continued.

As of Friday night, no arrests had been made.
