PORTLAND, Maine — The infant placed into a medically induced coma due to injuries died overnight at Maine Medical Center, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Saturday afternoon.

State police said in a statement that a 9-month-old infant was taken to Mid-Coast Hospital in Brunswick by its mother at 4:30 a.m. Thursday after suffering unspecified injuries Wednesday, according to the Times Record.

The baby was transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where it was placed in a medically induced coma.

“An autopsy is scheduled for this weekend at the state medical examiner’s office,” McCausland said. “We will continue to investigation the circumstances. Obviously, the medical examiner’s information will be important as we learn and find out why this child died.”

McCausland added that it’s still “way too early” for charges to be filed.

“We’re still investigating the circumstances,” he added. “We’re talking to the mom and her boyfriend and we’re working with Bath police.”

Police have spoken to the infant’s mother, Danielle Malcom, 21, and her boyfriend Benjamin McNeill, 29.

The pair brought the infant to the hospital “as a result of concerns they had for a change in [the baby’s] behaviors,” state police Sgt. Jason Richards said in a news release, according to the Times Record.
