SWAN’S ISLAND, Maine — An island resident is facing criminal charges after he allegedly shot someone’s pet guinea hen with a bow and arrow, according to the local police chief.

The owner of the bird discovered it had been shot when it walked up her driveway with an arrow protruding through its body from its backside to the front, Swan’s Island police Chief Paul Gamble said Friday. The bird had to be euthanized because of the injury.

Gamble said Roman Cook, 22, is facing two charges — aggravated cruelty to animals and shooting a domestic animal — in connection with the May 5 incident. Cook was not charged until June 13 because of the amount of time it took for Gamble to complete the investigation, he said.

Gamble said the animal cruelty charge is aggravated because Cook allegedly shot but did not kill the bird. He said the owner kept the guinea hen strictly as a pet.

“The hen was suffering,” Gamble said.

The police chief said that when he confronted Cook about the incident, Cook confessed to shooting the bird. Gamble said he obtained and executed a search warrant for Cook’s residence, where he found and confiscated the bow as evidence in the case.

Cook also was charged with violating his probation, Gamble said, which police used as the grounds for his June 13 arrest. Cook still was on probation for a 2010 incident in which he and another Swan’s Island resident broke into 13 shorefront homes on Long Pond on Mount Desert Island and caused more than $125,000 in damage. Cook was sentenced to serve two years in prison and then three years of probation for the break-ins.

Cook was released from Hancock County Jail on June 17 after his probation officer lifted the probation hold imposed by his arrest, according to a jail official. Gamble said Cook is due to appear July 24 in court in Ellsworth on the charges stemming from the hen shooting.
