THOMASTON, Maine — The town issued a news release Thursday announcing that it was informed by the Maine Department of Transportation that the Starr Street sidewalk project had been approved.

It will receive nearly $100,000 for sidewalks behind the downtown business block.

The project consists of the construction of new handicapped-accessible walkway with asphalt pavement and granite curbing, detectable warning devices and crosswalks on the north side of Starr Street and on the west side of Watts Lane which will serve students walking to the elementary, grammar and middles schools, as well as more conveniently connecting the schools and north side residents to the downtown.

The town’s matching share of the $97,380 grant will be $24,345.

The work is the final phase of a downtown improvement project and expected to be complete in 2016.
