BANGOR — Heath Campbell of Bangor won his 4,000th harness race as a driver on May 31 at Bangor Raceway. Campbell entered the night with 3,998 wins and was scheduled to drive for nine of the races on the Friday’s race card. The 4,000th win came during Campbell’s ninth race of the night, driving Pembroke Easy Call who crossed the finish line first.
“This is an extremely elite class that Heath has entered into,” said Michael Hopkins, director of raceway operations at Hollywood Casino Bangor. “He has been racing in Maine for more than 20 years, and he has a tremendous track record in that time. We are happy for him and were proud to see his 4,000th win happen here in Bangor.”
Campbell, 41, is a native of Lewiston, but spent part of his childhood in Canada. He is no stranger to the racing scene in Maine, racing actively in Bangor and Scarborough and on the fair circuit in August. He is a third-generation horseman, and his brother, Drew, is also a trainer and a horseman, with more than 3,100 wins under his belt. Heath Campbell was named Maine Driver of the Year last year after setting a personal record of winning $1.14 million in purses.
The 130th season of racing at Bangor Raceway began the first weekend in May.
