BANGOR, Maine — A Cutler man was sentenced Tuesday to three years in prison on a charge of theft of disability benefits.

Richard Ramsdell, 38, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Bangor, U.S. Attorney Thomas Delahanty II said in a news release.

Ramsdell was also ordered to pay $142,668 in restitution, Delahanty stated.

Court records indicate that Ramsdell stole U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits by making fraudulent statements about his back and mental condition on VA questionnaires and by claiming to be unemployed and incapable of working.

During that timespan, Ramsdell had been working for a wreath manufacturer, and as a fisherman and painter.
