AUGUSTA, Maine — Right-hander Zack Bean allowed only five hits to lead the Westbrook Blue Blazes to a 2-0 high school baseball victory over the Messalonskee Eagles in the Class A state final Saturday at Morton Field.

Western Maine champ Westbrook captured its first state title since 1951, won its final nine games and finished at 17-3. Eastern Maine champ Messalonskee of Oakland ended its bid for a second straight state title with a 13-7 record.

Bean also drove in what proved to be the game-winning run in the sixth on a one-out, bases-loaded grounder to second baseman Jake Dexter. Dexter threw to second for the forceout, but Bean beat out the relay throw to first, avoiding the double play and allowing Ryan Gilligan to score.

Kaleb Kent scored an insurance run for Westbrook in the seventh as he singled, stole second, advanced on a wild pitch and came home on Collin Joyce’s ground-ball out.

Messalonskee starter Patrick Breton allowed only three hits and a run through six innings before reliever Devin Warren allowed a hit and run in the seventh.
