BUCKSPORT AND CRAIG POND – Genevieve Oliver Mercer, 89, passed away peacefully June 15, 2013 at a Bangor hospital. Genevieve was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Millinocket, the daughter of William W. and Mildred (French) Oliver.
She moved to Bucksport at the age of six, graduating from Bucksport High School in 1942 and the University of Maine in 1945. Gen married the love of her life, Everett Mercer in Sept 1945. They had two sons, Robert and Paul, and spent more than 60 happy summers at their Craig Pond camp. As a young girl Gen spent summers at Camp Natarswi and became one of the first Junior Maine Guides. Her love of the outdoors was shared with Everett, fishing in the north wood lakes, fly fishing the eastern Maine rivers or hunting and snowmobiling around Bucksport. She was an active member of the community and the Elm Street Congregational Church, where she was their oldest and longest serving member. Genevieve taught Home Economics for many years in Bucksport, where she also coached basketball and softball.
Genevieve was predeceased by her parents and husband, Everett. She is survived by her sister, Pauline and husband, George; sons, Robert and wife, Jean, Paul and wife, Brenda; grandchildren and spouses, Todd and Fawn Mercer, Shawn and Molly Mercer, Cara and Kevin Audibert, Carly and Bill Roak and Kyle Mercer; great-grandchildren, Jeb, Ivy, Kassi, Bailey, Lily, Emilee, Maizey, Emery, Ella, Owen; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. June 19, at Elm Street Congregational Church with Pastors Mary Angela Davis and Peter Remick officiating.
