TURNER, Maine — A dump truck rollover shut down traffic on Route 4 near Pomodoros Bistro just before the commuter hour Friday afternoon.

The crash was reported at about 4 p.m. An hour later, traffic was still being diverted onto County and Lone Pine roads. The accident was cleared and traffic resumed on Route 4 by 5:30 p.m.

Witnesses said it appeared the truck rolled into a ditch after colliding with a mid-sized car. Police said early indications are that the driver of the car fell asleep at the wheel and crossed the center line.

Rescue crews pulled at least one person from the wrecked car. It was believed the truck driver got out on his own.

The crash flung debris across the road and brought traffic to a standstill. Maine State Police, joined by Androscoggin County Sheriff’s deputies, quickly closed down the roadway as rescue efforts got underway and an investigation began.

“It was a mess,” said Kayla Daniell Trepanier, a Turner woman who helped direct traffic at the scene until police arrived. She and her friends heard the squeal of tires on pavement followed by a heavy thud. Metal car parts were strewn everywhere, she said.

“When we showed up at the scene, the truck driver was out of his truck and on the phone,” Trepanier said. “He said he was fine but didn’t know about the other car. We drove down further and saw the car with no front end. I parked and ran across the street with my friends. My shoes had flown off, so I went down the street barefoot and started asking cars to turn around in the Pomodoros’ parking lot or in a driveway before.”

Kim Bergeron Spugnardi, another Turner woman who saw the scene, said when she drove up, the truck driver was in an ambulance and firefighters were extricating someone from the car.

The extent of injuries was not immediately known. Maine State Police were continuing to investigate into the night.
