FAIRFIELD, Maine — A two-car collision on the Norridgewock Road on Saturday morning caused a woman to be airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries and also forced police to divert the Trek Across Maine for a brief stretch of road.

The accident occurred at 7:45 a.m., when Lauren Swain, 19, of Skowhegan pulled onto the Norridgewock Road in a 2000 Dodge Stratus sedan.

Sgt. Matthew Bard of the Fairfield Police Department said that witnesses reported that Swain came to a complete stop on the Middle Road before she turned directly into the path of an SUV driven by Tiffany Glidden, 28, of Fairfield. The speed limit was 55 miles per hour where the accident happened, he said.

“The other lady just had nowhere to go,” he said Saturday afternoon of Glidden, who had two passengers riding with her — an 11-year-old girl and an 8-year-old girl.

The children were uninjured in the crash, but Swain was taken by LifeFlight of Maine helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

“She’s in stable condition now, from what I’ve been told by her family,” Bard said.

Glidden was taken by ambulance to Inland Hospital in Waterville, where she was treated and released.

Traffic was diverted around the accident scene until the road was cleared at about 10:15 a.m., he said. That included riders in the annual Trek Across Maine, who took a spur road that did not add distance to their ride, Bard said.

An accident Friday morning in western Maine involving a tractor-trailer truck claimed the life of one cyclist, 23-year-old David LeClair of Watertown, Mass.

According to Bard, emergency crews that assisted at the scene of the Fairfield collision included the Fairfield Police Department, Fairfield Fire and Rescue, Oakland Police Department, Delta Ambulance, Reddington-Fairview EMS and LifeFlight of Maine.
