SWANVILLE – Judith Linda McMahon died Sunday, June 2, 2013, at her home, with birds singing their evening songs and the poplar leaves rustling. She was surrounded by her beloved daughters, Anna and Maya; twin sister, Janet; and nieces, Josie and Sophie. Judy was born May 6, 1957, in Buffalo, N.Y.

Her family made its home in many states, from Hawaii to Virginia and later Connecticut. She went to high school in Old Lyme, Conn., and graduated from the University of New Hampshire, where she studied forestry. She later earned a music degree from the University of Southern Maine. Judy’s work took many forms – she tended a sheep and goat herd at Smokey House in Vermont; researched Maine island ecology for the forest service; was the assistant director of The Landing School, Kennebunkport; tended gardens at Johnny’s Selected Seeds; was a graphic designer in Belfast, and created illustrations for children’s stories. But her greatest passion was music. She touched many lives as a violin teacher and performer in the Belfast area, where she had a studio for the past decade. Playing music with family and friends was one of her greatest joys. Judy valued simplicity, honesty, goodness, gentleness, and was a genuinely caring person – loved by all who knew her. She marveled at the beauty of the world right up to her last days and was happiest outside walking with her friends, swimming in the surf, skating on the family’s pond, sailing with her dad, and paddling the Goose River in her canoe. She loved this world.

She leaves her daughters, Anna and Maya French; sister, Janet McMahon; three brothers, Greg, Barney and Scott McMahon; parents, Paul and Bunny McMahon; and eight nieces and nephews. Her family is grateful for this wonderful community that enveloped her with love.

All are welcome to come to a musical potluck celebration for Judy, which will be held on the evening of the solstice, June 21 at her home in Swanville; rain date is June 22. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association – MOFGA, P.O. Box 170, Unity, ME 04988.
