BANGOR, Maine — Organizers of the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame will sell off pairs of seats from the storied Bangor Auditorium beginning later this month.
Seats will be available for purchase at the Bass Park complex from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, June 21, and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, June 22. Each pair will be sold for $25. All proceeds go toward the effort to build a Maine Basketball Hall of Fame in the concourse of the new Cross Insurance Center.
Before demolition began at the auditorium this month, volunteers from Penobscot Job Corps and the United Technologies Center unbolted and removed more than 300 pairs of seats, along with some boards from the bleachers.
“This has been a real community effort to salvage these pieces of history,” said Steve Pound, one of the hall of fame organizers who coordinated the seat removal and sale. “Both Penobscot Job Corps and United Technology Center brought student volunteers to the building to help remove the seats and move them to the storage location. I’m sure it was a labor of love for many of them to serve their community.”
Because of the way the seats were installed, it was only possible to remove them in pairs, according to Pound.
Payments will need to be made on site in cash or check only.
Seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and requests for specific seat numbers cannot be accommodated, according to organizers. Seat pairs will need to be mounted to a base or wall after purchase because of how they are designed.
Today, the Bangor Auditorium is just a shell, as crews have stripped most of its walls revealing the interior, including seats that were left behind. The auditorium floor was donated to the Old Town-Orono YMCA.
