PORTLAND, Maine — Two Portland women are facing charges after an assault at the Cumberland County Jail earlier this week, according to officials.
Heidi Stevens, 39, and Crystal Miller, 26, allegedly were seeking drugs from another inmate when the assault took place on Saturday, according to Capt. Craig Smith of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Stevens and Miller lured the victim was into a cell in the pod where the assault occurred, Smith said. Police believe the victim did not have any drugs in her possession.
After another inmate informed corrections officers of the assault, the victim was removed from the unit while Stevens and Miller were placed in the jail’s maximum security unit.
After an investigation, the district attorney’s office and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department made the decision on Tuesday to charge Stevens and Miller with unlawful sexual contact and assault, Smith said.
Both suspects were arraigned in Portland Unified Court on Wednesday and remain at the jail, Smith said.
