AUGUSTA — A bill moving through the legislature would protect those who have lost their jobs from discrimination when applying for new ones by making it illegal to disqualify the unemployed when advertising for jobs.
LD 1157, “An Act To Establish the Fair Chance for Employment Act,” would make it illegal for employment agencies or employers to advertise that current employment is a requirement or qualification for a position.
The bill would also provide funding for a Labor and Safety Inspector position to enforce the act.
Violations would lead to a $250 to $1,000 fine. The act would not take away an employer or employment agency’s right to consider employment history and the reasons for an applicant’s employment status when making hiring decisions.
