BANGOR, Maine — A local transient was arrested Tuesday afternoon after assaulting another man at a First Street apartment, police said.

Police were dispatched to the scene shortly after 4 p.m. when they learned Michael Ireland, 49, was assaulting a 50-year old man, according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.

Officers Tim Wheelden, Keven Haefele and Josh Kuhn all arrived at the same time, the sergeant said, and found the victim with a bruise under his eye.

Edwards said the assault took place in a hallway of the apartment building.

Once police checked on the victim they began searching for Ireland, and eventually he was found under a staircase, face down and passed out, the sergeant said.

Edwards said a pair of scissors were found next to Ireland, along with two bottles of alcohol. The scissors were not used in the assault, but Ireland was heavily intoxicated.

Police woke him up and placed him in custody, Edwards said. Ireland was charged with assault along with four outstanding warrants, the sergeant said.

He remained at the Penobscot County Jail Wednesday.
