Maureen Ashe Burrill

SOUTHWEST HARBOR – After a brief bout of pneumonia, Maureen Ashe Burrill passed away peacefully Dec. 12, 2012, at Mount Desert Island Hospital. She was born Norma Maureen Ashe Oct. 11, 1937, in Springfield, Mass., to Norma Darcy and Thomas J. Ashe.
Maureen grew up in Springfield, Mass., and graduated from Cathedral High School. Her family later moved to Wilbraham, Mass., where they lived on Nine Mile Pond which was the location of many summer days spent swimming and boating with her sister, Sally, and brother, Thomas J. Ashe Jr. Maureen attended the University of Connecticut and received her bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1959. It was at the University of Connecticut where she met her future husband, Frederick Burrill. They were married July 7, 1962. Fred and Maureen moved to Southwest Harbor in 1968. Maureen worked as a nurse at Mount Desert Island Hospital and later volunteered at Pemetic Elementary School and the Southwest Harbor Library.
Maureen leaves behind her son, Jonathan and wife, Alexandra; grandchildren, Kate Addison and Gracen Spencer of Hopkinton, Mass.; brother-in-law, Thomas Perkins of Blue Hill; and brother-in-law, George McVety and wife, Judy. Maureen was predeceased by her mother, Norma Darcy; father, Thomas J. Ashe; son, Matthew Spencer; brother, Thomas J. Ashe Jr.; sister, Jacqueline “Sally” Ashe; brother, John Darcy; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Perkins.
Services will be private. Gifts in her memory may be made to Mount Desert Island Hospital, Bar Harbor.
