HAMPDEN, Maine — Tim Scott, a former star athlete at Ellsworth High School and second baseman for the University of Maine who now resides in Hampden, won school board approval Wednesday night to be the new Hampden Academy girls basketball coach.

“We had a large number of applicants, I think 17,” said Hampden Athletic Director Mike Bisson.

Bisson put a committee together to review the applicants, then went over its review. He recommended Scott to the principal, the principal approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the superintendent, who sent Scott’s application to the school board for final approval.

“It took longer than I wanted,” said Bisson, who also had to find head coaches for football and field hockey at the same time.

“It was fairly time-consuming,” said Bisson, “but I feel it was a pretty thorough process, and Tim was the one that stood out for us.”

Scott was a volunteer assistant with the Brewer High girls team this winter and took over after Chad Bradbury resigned his post in March to devote more time to his and his wife’s property management business.

Scott was a Bangor Daily News All-Maine boys basketball player twice while playing for the Eagles, on the second team in 1986 and the first team in 1988, and received the first Mr. Basketball Award in 1988. He also starred in baseball at Ellsworth and played four years for the University of Maine.

In 1992, he signed a pro contract with the Colorado Rockies and played two years in their farm system before shoulder surgery ended his pro baseball career, according to a previous BDN story.

Scott has coached the Brewer High varsity baseball team in the past, and taught and coached at Piscataquis Community High School in Guilford. His PCHS boys soccer team won an Eastern Maine Class C title in 2000, and he coached the girls basketball team in 1999 and 2000.

He became the Brewer JV girls basketball coach in 2005 when Andy Nickerson took over the varsity girls basketball program.

“Tim has a great background, he’s been involved in eastern Maine sports for a long time, and we’re excited to have him,” said Bisson.
