ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Tremont man who was subdued by a Bar Harbor store owner as he allegedly tried to rob the store at gunpoint and several alleged drug dealers were among more than a dozen people indicted Thursday by a Hancock County grand jury.
Chris P. Stevens, 39, entered the back door of the Town Hill Market on Mount Desert Island a few minutes before it opened on the morning of April 24 and, while brandishing a pistol at owner Richard Simis, demanded money, Simis told police. The owner grabbed Stevens and the two wrestled for several minutes before Simis subdued him outside the store and waved down a passing motorist for help. The gun discharged twice while the two men struggled for the weapon but neither was shot.
Stevens was indicted Thursday on charges of burglary, theft, robbery, operating a motor vehicle after license revocation, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and violating conditions of release.
A man from Hollywood, Fla., was indicted Thursday on charges of unlawful trafficking in drugs, criminal forfeiture and unlawful possession of drugs in connection with an April 1 incident in Ellsworth. JonPaul F. Haddad, 27, is accused of selling $3,000 worth of oxycodone to a Maine Drug Enforcement Agency officer behind a High Street restaurant, police have said.
Also indicted was a Franklin woman who police say sold marijuana several times over a period of months to a police officer working undercover. Terrie Lee Kasper, 50, was indicted Thursday on charges of aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs, unlawful trafficking of scheduled drugs, unlawful possession of drugs, and criminal forfeiture.
Police executed a search warrant this past January at Kasper’s home, seizing two and a half pounds of marijuana with an estimated value of $4,500 that was found in a bag along with a loaded, .32-caliber semi-automatic handgun. Also seized were a shotgun and two rifles that later were identified as stolen, police have said.
An Ellsworth man accused of selling heroin out of a house on Water Street also was indicted Thursday. Matthew H. Wright, 33, was arrested Jan. 23 when police executed a search warrant at the house and allegedly found more than $11,000 worth of heroin and two handguns.
