Bangor Band starts summer concert under baton of new director

BANGOR — The Bangor Band will launch its 2013 Summer Concert Series with a free public concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, at Peirce Park, beside the Bangor Public Library on Harlow Street. This concert is sponsored by the library.

The Bangor Band will be under the direction of band conductor Curvin “Chip” Farnham. Former conductor Fred Goldrich retired last year.

Farnham recently retired from the University of Maine, where he served as the director of bands for more than 20 years. He also conducted the Brewer Community Band, and has been invited to direct concert bands at music camps and festivals throughout the United States.

Under Farnham’s direction since September, the band has grown in size, with a strong emphasis on an enlarged brass section which, according to band members, makes for a much fuller sound.

The Bangor Band has sought a new permanent location for its public summer performances, after the band’s much-beloved gazebo was torn down in 2011 to make room for the new Cross Insurance Center. After working closely with the city of Bangor for the past year, the Bangor Band’s new concert location is tentatively slated to be on Bangor’s Waterfront.

The band’s membership is multi-generational in nature, ranging from players well into their 80s to teen members still in high school, including Mason Duplissie, a bass clarinet player and a student at Brewer High School. The Bangor Band’s teenage oboist, Garrett Hale, who has been a favorite soloist in previous concerts, will leave the band to attend college in the fall, and the band will need an oboe player to replace him.

Founded in 1859, the Bangor Band is one of the oldest continuous community bands in the

United States. The band’s ongoing sponsor is Bangor Parks and Recreation.
