Freeport school bus carrying 17 students strikes car

By Beth Brogan, BDN Staff

FREEPORT, Maine — A Freeport school bus carrying 17 middle school students on their way home from school struck a car just before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Snow Road and Elm Street.

The bus hit the front end of the 2006 black Nissan, which was stopped at the intersection, and pushed the car back into the ditch, Freeport Police Lt. Susan Nourse said.

The driver of the Nissan, 18-year-old Caroline Rowell of Pownal, complained of pain at the scene, but no one was taken to a hospital, according to Nourse.

The driver of the 2005 school bus, Gary Baker, whose age and address were not immediately available, was not charged, Nourse said.

The students were transferred to another bus and taken home.
