Corrections officer shoots himself in thigh

By Abigail Curtis, BDN Staff

WALDO, Maine — An off-duty corrections officer at the Maine Coastal Regional Reentry Center was taken to the hospital Tuesday morning after he accidentally shot himself in the thigh.

According to Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, 30-year-old Walter Wagner of Waldo did not appear to be seriously injured after the 9 a.m. accident. Wagner evidently had reached to pick his .40-caliber Glock handgun out of its holster when it discharged, wounding him in the leg.

His wife called to report the injury, and Wagner was taken by Belfast Ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast for treatment. Trafton said that Wagner shot himself on his day off with his own weapon, not a work-issued gun.
