Water main break in Portland closes federal courthouse

By Seth Koenig, BDN Staff

PORTLAND, Maine — A water main leak on Pearl Street in Portland Monday morning bottlenecked traffic between Middle and Newbury streets, a Portland Water District spokeswoman said.

An automated message on the U S. District Court’s main telephone number Monday morning stated that the building was closed for the day because of the break, and calls were redirected to the federal courthouse in Bangor.

Operations at the Cumberland County courthouse next door, however, are not affected, Maine Judicial Branch spokeswoman Mary Ann Lynch said. All scheduled court proceedings at the building will be held as planned, she said.

Portland Water District spokeswoman Michelle Clements announced that traffic on Pearl Street has been reduced to one-way southbound, between Middle and Newbury streets.

Repairs on the line, that dates back to 1930, are estimated to be complete by around 6 p.m. Monday. No definitive cause of the break has been identified Clements said.
